Podiums

Podiums are concrete structural platforms in multi-story construction that provide a strong, fire-resistant base to support lighter upper-level framing systems. In typical podium construction, the lower one or two floors are built using noncombustible, high‑performance materials such as precast concrete, steel, or masonry. Above this level, wood or light-gauge framing can be used to reduce material costs while maximizing allowable building height under modern codes.

This hybrid approach has become a preferred solution for mid-rise multifamily housing, mixed-use developments, and dense urban or suburban projects, offering an efficient balance of structural performance, speed, and value.

Benefits of Podium Construction

Optimal Use of Space: Podiums unlock valuable square footage in the lower levels of a building.

Enhanced Durability: Concrete podium slabs deliver long-term strength, exceptional load capacity, and resilience against moisture, pests, and environmental wear.

Fire Ratings: Noncombustible concrete podium systems help meet strict fire‑separation requirements between parking, retail, and residential uses.

Sound Insulation: Concrete naturally absorbs and dampens sound more effectively than wood.

Speed of Installation: Using precast hollowcore in podium construction accelerates project schedules. Planks are manufactured off-site while sitework is underway, then installed quickly with minimal field labor. Once in place, the finished concrete deck allows mechanical, electrical, and plumbing trades to begin work immediately — no curing delay required.

Podium Applications

Podium construction is ideal for:

  • Multifamily housing (4–7 stories)
  • Mixed-use retail + residential developments
  • Student housing
  • Senior living communities
  • Urban infill projects with tight footprints
  • Buildings requiring structured or partially enclosed parking

Common configurations include 5-over-1, 5-over-2, 4-over-1, and 3-over-1 designs, allowing teams to tailor height, density, and building use to project goals and market demand.

Building Specifications

The podium design's flexibility allows it to align with most architectural and structural layouts. Hollowcore planks offer:

  • Long clear spans with fewer columns for open parking or retail bays
  • Standard 4‑ft widths, field-ripped to custom dimensions as needed
  • Compatibility with steel, masonry, or precast bearing systems
  • Integration with MEP systems through topping slabs, conduit placements, and coordinated openings

The result is a predictable, adaptable structural platform that fits the majority of mid‑rise project types.

Available Products

Precast solutions for podium systems typically include:

  • Hollowcore Planks - High-strength, prestressed floor and roof components
  • Beams and Columns - For load transfer and structural support
  • Wall Panels - For shear resistance, fire separation, and enclosure
  • Stairs and Landings - Durable, ready-to-install vertical circulation

These concrete components combine to form a streamlined, high-performance podium system engineered for speed, safety, and long-term value.
