County Prestress & Precast Prestressed Bridge Girders Accelerate Final Phase of Zoo Interchange Project

The Wisconsin Zoo Interchange North Leg Project is the final phase of one of the largest public works projects ever to take place in the state of Wisconsin. While the reconstruction of the interchange was completed in 2018, the expansion of 1-41 north of the interchange started in 2021 and was projected to be completed in 2023.

The North Leg project required the replacement of many bridges, including the bridge crossing Underwood Creek. County Prestress & Precast Prestressed Bridge Girders were specified for the new structure.

The 1.7-mile segment of 1-41 is one of the busiest stretches of freeway in the state, and the project had an aggressive schedule in order to minimize road closure time.

County Prestress & Precast manufactured and delivered 208 prestressed concrete bridge girders, using multiple production facilities to meet the delivery schedule. Fifty-six girders were produced in County Prestress & Precast Roberts facility, and the remaining girders were produced in the Janesville facility.
